Hair loss refers to the reduction of hair on the scalp. The medical term for this condition is alopecia, which can either be temporary or permanent. The most prevalent type of hair loss happens progressively and is known as "androgenetic alopecia." This condition arises due to a combination of hormonal factors—specifically male hormones called androgens—and genetics. Other varieties of hair loss include alopecia areata, which involves patchy hair loss that often regrows, telogen effluvium, characterized by rapid hair shedding following events like childbirth, fever, or sudden weight loss, and traction alopecia, which results from hair thinning due to tight hairstyles like braids or ponytails. Both men and women usually experience gradual hair loss as they age, although it tends to be more significant in men.
