Definition of Silver poisoning

Argyria, or silver poisoning, leads to a grayish discoloration of the skin and other bodily tissues due to prolonged exposure to silver salts. An example from a medical report describes a woman in her 50s who developed gray skin after being given nose drops of unknown ingredients for allergies at age 11. By age 15, a skin biopsy confirmed silver deposits in her skin, traced back to the nose drops. During a hospital stay, her unusual skin color startled nurses who mistakenly assumed she was suffering from a condition due to her blue-grey complexion. Today, silver suspensions are sold in some health food stores and pharmacies, marketed as treatments for various conditions such as cancer, infections, parasites, chronic fatigue, acne, and more.
