Definition of MRCP

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a technique that uses MRI technology to visualize the bile ducts and pancreatic system. This method employs an MRI machine equipped with specialized software to produce images similar to those obtained by cholangiogram and pancreatogram through the more invasive ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), but without the risks associated with sedation, infection, or perforation. MRCP can be particularly helpful in diagnosing cases of unexplained abdominal pain where there is a low or uncertain likelihood of hepatobiliary issues, such as retained stones in the bile duct, cancer, or pancreatitis. It's worth noting that MRCP can also refer to something entirely different: in the UK, MRCP(UK) stands for Member of the Royal College of Physicians.
