Rhinovirus is a member of the Picornavirus family, responsible for numerous common colds and upper respiratory infections. Occasionally, it can lead to bronchiolitis. These viruses are single-stranded RNA types, with over 100 different variants identified. Rhinovirus infections are highly contagious and spread easily from person to person. Symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after exposure and include a sore throat, runny nose, cough, headaches, ear pressure, sneezing, and nasal irritation. When fever occurs, it is usually mild. The symptoms generally persist for 7 to 11 days and tend to resolve without intervention. Treatment generally involves rest, staying hydrated, and the use of decongestants or antihistamines.
