Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by the thinning of bones and a decrease in bone mass, primarily due to a loss of calcium and bone proteins. This condition increases the risk of fractures, which often heal slowly and poorly. It is most prevalent among older adults, particularly women, and those taking steroids or steroidal medications. If left untreated, osteoporosis can result in physical changes, such as the development of a hunched back, commonly referred to as a dowager's hump, and reduced mobility. Managing osteoporosis typically involves engaging in exercises that are weight-bearing to enhance bone density, maintaining a diet rich in calcium and other essential minerals for bone growth, using medications to boost bone density, and, in some cases, administering hormone therapy for postmenopausal women.
