Definition of Prostatodynia

Prostatodynia is a form of inflammation in men where the prostate, a walnut-sized gland located beneath the bladder that encircles the urethra and adds fluid to semen, is affected. This condition is not caused by bacterial infection, and there are no signs of infection-fighting cells in the urine of those who have it. It is generally a chronic and painful disorder. Symptoms can include chills, fever, lower back and pelvic pain, body aches, burning sensations, and a frequent, urgent need to urinate, often appearing and disappearing unpredictably. Tests on urine and prostate fluid show no evidence of any infectious organisms or infection-fighting cells. Treatment options are largely ineffective; attempts to use antibiotics and muscle relaxants typically do not succeed.
