Definition of Oxygenation

Oxygenation

Oxygenation is the process of delivering oxygen to the blood and, ultimately, to the body's tissues and cells. Adequate oxygenation is essential for survival, because organs such as the brain and heart begin to suffer damage within minutes when deprived of oxygen.

During CPR and resuscitation, maintaining oxygenation is a primary goal, achieved through rescue breathing, bag-valve-mask ventilation, supplemental oxygen, and advanced airways. Clinicians monitor oxygenation using pulse oximetry and, in critical settings, blood gas analysis. Balancing adequate oxygen delivery while avoiding harmful over-ventilation is a key principle of high-quality emergency care.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
