Definition of Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM)

Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM)

A Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM), sometimes called an Ambu bag, is a hand-held resuscitation device used to deliver positive-pressure ventilation to a patient who is not breathing or is breathing inadequately. It consists of a self-inflating bag, a one-way valve, and a face mask, and can be connected to supplemental oxygen to raise the delivered oxygen concentration.

The BVM is a cornerstone tool in both basic and advanced resuscitation, allowing rescuers to support breathing during cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or sedation. Effective use requires a tight mask seal and proper technique — squeezing slowly to produce visible chest rise while avoiding excessive volume, which can force air into the stomach. Two-rescuer technique, with one maintaining the seal and the other ventilating, improves delivery.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
