Intrauterine Device (IUD) for Contraception:An intrauterine device (IUD) is a tool placed within the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It can take various shapes, such as a coil, loop, triangle, or T, and is crafted from either plastic or metal. A healthcare provider inserts the IUD into the uterus. The exact mechanism by which IUDs prevent pregnancy isn't fully understood, but they appear to work by either immobilizing sperm on their journey to the fallopian tubes or by altering the uterine lining, making it unsuitable for a fertilized egg to implant. IUDs are among the most reliable contraceptive methods available, particularly for individuals in stable, monogamous relationships who are not at high risk of infections. Serious complications from IUDs are uncommon today, although there is a slightly increased risk of developing complications such as uterine perforation, abnormal bleeding, and cramps, primarily occurring during or shortly after the device is inserted.
