Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a life-threatening heart rhythm in which the ventricles — the heart's main pumping chambers — quiver chaotically instead of contracting in a coordinated way. As a result, the heart pumps little or no blood, causing immediate cardiac arrest and loss of consciousness.
VF is the most common initial rhythm in sudden cardiac arrest and is a shockable rhythm, meaning it can be treated effectively with defibrillation combined with high-quality CPR. Because survival falls rapidly with each minute of delay, immediate recognition, prompt chest compressions, and the earliest possible defibrillation are essential to restoring an organized, life-sustaining rhythm.
CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
