Gephyrophobia refers to an intense and ongoing fear of crossing bridges. Those who suffer from this phobia often feel significant anxiety, even when they are aware that their fear is unfounded. This apprehension can stem partly from a fear of enclosed spaces or a fear of heights. Drivers with this phobia might be anxious about getting into an accident in heavy traffic or losing control of their cars. Bridges that are high above water or deep ravines are particularly daunting, as are those that are exceptionally long or narrow. While the fear of bridges is quite common, many people aren't aware that there's a specific term for it: "gephyrophobia." The word itself is derived from Greek, with "gephyra" meaning "bridge" and "phobos" meaning "fear."
