Definition of Mania

Mania is defined as an unusually high mood state, often marked by symptoms such as excessive happiness, heightened irritability, severe lack of sleep, grandiose ideas, increased or louder speech, disjointed and rapid thoughts, heightened sexual drive, significantly boosted energy and activity levels, poor decision-making, and unsuitable social conduct. A less severe version that doesn't require hospitalization is known as hypomania. When mania includes depressive symptoms, it is referred to as mixed mania. The term "mania" originates from the Greek word for madness, stemming from "mainmai," meaning to rave in anger. In Greek mythology, the Maniai were the Furies who chased down those guilty of unpunished crimes, driving them to insanity. For related topics, see Hypomania and Mixed mania.
