Definition of Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA)

Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA)

A Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) is a supraglottic airway device consisting of a tube with an inflatable cuff that sits over the laryngeal opening, creating a seal that allows ventilation without entering the trachea. It is easier and faster to insert than an endotracheal tube and does not require visualizing the vocal cords.

The LMA is valuable when endotracheal intubation is difficult or unnecessary, including during resuscitation, anesthesia, and emergency airway management by less experienced providers. As an advanced airway, it lets rescuers ventilate effectively and supports continuous chest compressions during CPR, though it provides less protection against aspiration than a cuffed endotracheal tube.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
