Definition of Airway Management

Airway Management

Airway management is the set of methods, maneuvers, and tools used to keep a person's airway open and clear so that air can move freely into and out of the lungs. It is a first priority in any emergency, because without a patent airway, oxygen cannot reach the bloodstream regardless of other interventions.

Techniques range from simple, basic-level actions — the head-tilt/chin-lift, jaw-thrust, recovery position, and clearing visible obstructions — to advanced interventions such as the bag-valve-mask (BVM), laryngeal mask airway, and endotracheal intubation. Relieving a blocked airway, as in choking, may require back blows and abdominal thrusts. Effective airway management supports adequate oxygenation and is closely tied to rescue breathing.

Strong airway skills underpin every level of resuscitation, from BLS through ACLS. CPR Certification Labs teaches these techniques hands-on in its AHA-aligned CPR and life support courses.
