Definition of ACLS Algorithm

ACLS Algorithm

The ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Algorithm is a set of standardized, evidence-based protocols that guide healthcare providers through the management of cardiac arrest and other life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies such as symptomatic bradycardia, unstable tachycardia, and stroke. Developed by the American Heart Association, it gives teams a clear, repeatable sequence to follow under extreme pressure.

The algorithm organizes care into systematic steps: high-quality chest compressions, rhythm analysis to identify shockable versus non-shockable rhythms, defibrillation when indicated, advanced airway management, timed medication administration such as epinephrine and amiodarone, and structured post-resuscitation care. By assigning clear roles and timing, the algorithm reduces errors and interruptions, improving the chance of return of spontaneous circulation.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
