Tachycardia is a heart rate faster than 100 beats per minute in adults. It can be a normal response to exercise, fever, stress, or dehydration, but it becomes a concern when it arises from an abnormal electrical rhythm or when it is too fast for the heart to pump efficiently.
Symptomatic or unstable tachycardia can cause palpitations, lightheadedness, chest pain, shortness of breath, or loss of consciousness. In the ACLS framework, treatment depends on whether the patient is stable or unstable and on the specific rhythm: options range from vagal maneuvers and medications to synchronized cardioversion for unstable patients. Identifying the underlying cause is essential to long-term management.
