Definition of Post-Resuscitation Care

Post-Resuscitation Care

Post-resuscitation care (also called post-cardiac-arrest care) is the structured treatment provided after the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) to stabilize the patient, limit further injury, and improve the chances of a good neurological recovery. The period immediately after resuscitation is fragile, with high risk of re-arrest and organ dysfunction.

Key components include optimizing oxygenation and ventilation, maintaining adequate blood pressure and circulation, identifying and treating the underlying cause (such as a heart attack), targeted temperature management to protect the brain, and close monitoring in an intensive care setting. This phase is a vital link in the chain of survival, since restoring a pulse is only the beginning of recovery.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
