Definition of Roundworm

Roundworm: A type of worm that emerges in the intestines and resides there. The eggs typically enter the body through contaminated food, water, or by placing fingers in the mouth after touching an infected surface. Symptoms of a roundworm infection include tiredness, weight loss, irritability, lack of appetite, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Medication can cure the infection in about a week. Without treatment, complications may arise. An example of a roundworm is Trichuris trichiura, also referred to as the human whipworm. This parasite is prevalent globally, especially in regions with tropical climates and inadequate sanitation, and is commonly found in children. Infection with T. trichiura is not uncommon in the United States, particularly in the southern states.
