Sulfonamides:This group of sulfa-based antibiotics is utilized for combating bacterial and certain fungal infections. Some common examples include sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole (known by the brand name Thiosulfil Forte), sulfamethoxazole (Gantanol), sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin), and various potent combinations of three sulfonamides. Sulfa drugs work by disrupting cell functions in bacteria and fungi. They were once considered miracle drugs before other antibiotics were developed and continue to be in use today. Since these drugs accumulate in the urine prior to excretion, they are frequently prescribed for treating urinary tract infections. However, sulfa drugs can interact dangerously with both prescription and over-the-counter medications, including PABA-containing sunscreens, and are not suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions. Additionally, many people have allergies to sulfa drugs. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, any allergies to medications, and your complete medical history before using sulfonamides.
