Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe allergic response affecting the entire body, identified by a distinct rash that impacts the skin and mucous membranes, such as the inside of the mouth (buccal), eyes (conjunctiva), and other areas. This condition arises due to an allergic reaction to various immunologic triggers, including medications and infections. Complications might include skin peeling, bleeding, fever, and other serious symptoms. SJS is typically diagnosed when the unique rash appears between one to three weeks after exposure to a known trigger, and other diagnoses have been ruled out. Treatment strategies vary based on the suspected underlying cause. This condition is also referred to as erythema multiforme major.
