Definition of Sick sinus syndrome

Sick sinus syndrome

Sick sinus syndrome is a medical condition that presents with symptoms like dizziness and confusion. It stems from an issue with the heart's sinoatrial node, which serves as the body's natural pacemaker. When the SA node malfunctions, it often results in an unusually slow heart rate, known as bradycardia. However, other rhythm issues may arise, including a rapid heart rate, called tachycardia, or a combination of fast and slow heart rates, referred to as bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome. These irregularities can lead to inefficient heart pumping, potentially affecting overall heart function. The condition is typically diagnosed using an electrocardiogram (EKG). Treatment often involves medications, such as calcium channel blockers.
