The primary survey is the rapid, systematic first assessment of a critically ill or injured patient, designed to identify and treat immediately life-threatening problems in order of priority. It follows the ABCDE approach: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability (neurological status), and Exposure.
Each step is addressed before moving to the next, with any life threat treated as soon as it is found — for example, opening an obstructed airway or controlling major bleeding. The primary survey ensures responders focus on what will kill the patient first, and it is repeated whenever the patient's condition changes. A more detailed secondary survey follows once the patient is stabilized.
