Definition of Panic disorder

Panic Disorder:This condition is marked by unexpected episodes of intense fear and panic. Although panic attacks can happen without an obvious cause, they are often triggered by fear-inducing situations or thoughts, like riding in an elevator or driving a car. Common symptoms include a fast heartbeat, unusual chest sensations, difficulty breathing, dizziness, tingling, and feelings of anxiety. Hyperventilation, restlessness, and social withdrawal frequently occur as well. The disorder is thought to be caused by an abnormal activation of the body's hormonal system, leading to a sudden 'fight or flight' reaction. Treatment typically includes behavioral therapy, which uses exposure techniques to reduce symptoms, and medication.
