Definition of Paralytic ileus

Paralytic ileus refers to a blockage in the intestines caused by a lack of movement in the intestinal muscles. Complete paralysis isn't necessary for an obstruction to occur; however, the muscles need to be sufficiently inactive to halt the movement of food, resulting in a functional blockage. This condition often arises after certain surgeries, particularly those involving the abdomen. It can also be triggered by specific medications, spinal injuries, inflammation in the abdomen that affects the intestines, or disorders affecting the intestinal muscles. Regardless of the origin, ileus leads to symptoms like constipation, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. When examining the abdomen with a stethoscope, there are few or no bowel sounds due to the inactivity of the intestines. This condition is simply known as ileus.
