An overdose occurs when a person takes a toxic amount of a substance — whether a medication, recreational drug, or other chemical — overwhelming the body's ability to process it. Depending on the substance, an overdose can depress breathing, disturb heart rhythm, cause seizures, or lead to respiratory or cardiac arrest.
Emergency management depends on the substance involved and may include supporting the airway and breathing, administering specific antidotes such as naloxone for opioids, and providing CPR if the person has no pulse. Rapid recognition, activation of emergency services, and supportive care are critical, and any suspected overdose warrants immediate professional medical evaluation.
