Definition of Shingles

Shingles

Shingles is an acute infection caused by the same virus responsible for chickenpox. It typically affects individuals over 50, with the likelihood increasing as one ages. Shingles arises due to either exposure to chickenpox or the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which can remain inactive in nerve roots for many years following a chickenpox infection. This condition is known for its intense pain, involving inflammation of sensory nerves. Symptoms include numbness, itching, or pain, followed by clusters of small blisters arranged in a strip on one side of the body. Even after the rash heals, the pain may linger for weeks, months, or even years, a condition referred to as post-herpetic neuralgia.Individuals with shingles can transmit the virus to those who have never had chickenpox, causing them to develop chickenpox after close contact. To prevent or lessen the effects of shingles, the Herpes zoster vaccine is recommended for individuals aged 60 and older. Treatment typically involves antiviral and pain-relief medications. The term "shingles" is unrelated to roofing materials or a doctor's office sign. It originates from the Latin word "cingulum," meaning girdle, as shingles often wraps around part of the body. For more information, see shingles pain and related topics.
