Engagement refers to the feeling experienced by a pregnant woman when the lowest part of the fetus moves down and settles into the mother’s pelvis. This typically happens 2 to 3 weeks before labor begins. However, women who have had multiple pregnancies (multiparas) might not notice this until labor starts. When engagement takes place, the shape of the woman's belly visibly changes as the baby shifts lower in the abdomen. This event is also called "lightening" because the expectant mother often feels less pressure. Most women find relief and comfort after engagement, though some may experience lower back pain due to the fetus pressing against the tailbone and sciatic nerve. Additionally, some women may find movement more challenging because of the shift in their center of gravity.
