Definition of Macular (skin)

Macular (skin): This adjective describes specific changes in skin color that are neither raised nor sunken. Macules are small, flat spots or blemishes on the skin that can only be detected through sight, as they are not visible from the side. Dermatologists differentiate these flat spots, called macules, from papules, which are small, solid bumps that protrude from the skin, and vesicles, which are tiny fluid-filled blisters before they rupture. The term "macular" has its roots in the Latin word for a small spot or blemish. Note: Macular vision is related to the macula lutea, also known as the macula, a spot in the eye where vision is sharpest. Macular degeneration affects this area, leading to either partial or complete loss of central vision.
