Definition of Long QT syndrome

Long QT syndrome

Long QT syndrome is a heart condition affecting its electrical system, increasing the risk of irregular heartbeats, episodes, and sudden death. These arrhythmias often occur during physical exertion. Known as LQTS, this condition frequently goes unnoticed as it can be asymptomatic, yet it is a recognized cause of sudden cardiac death in young, seemingly healthy individuals, especially athletes. The term QT refers to a specific interval observed in an electrocardiogram (EKG) that measures heart function. LQTS can be caused by various genetic mutations. Romano-Ward syndrome represents one genetic variant of LQTS. Another form, Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome, is associated with significant sensorineural hearing loss and a prolonged QT interval.
