HCV PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests are used to detect the hepatitis C virus (HCV). There are three main types:1. **HCV PCR Viral Detection Test:** This qualitative test identifies the presence or absence of the C virus. 2. **HCV PCR Viral Load Test:** A quantitative test that measures the amount of HCV per milliliter of blood.3. **HCV PCR Genotype Test:** This test determines the specific subtype of the HCV virus. Each of these tests has a distinct purpose. The qualitative test confirms HCV presence in individuals who have tested positive for HCV antibodies. The quantitative test is used to evaluate how well a treatment is working. The genotype test, often performed before starting treatment, identifies the virus's subtype, which is crucial because treatments like interferon are typically more successful for genotypes 2 or 3 compared to genotype 1.
