Hepatitis C refers to liver inflammation caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is typically transmitted through blood contact, such as sharing needles or accidental needle sticks. This virus can cause severe liver damage, leading to serious complications and even liver cancer. While sexual transmission of the virus is uncommon, more than 50% of those infected with hepatitis C develop a chronic condition. Blood tests are used to diagnose this infection. The disease can usually be treated and potentially cured with antiviral medications, which are successful in over 90% of cases. In the past, chronic hepatitis C was often managed with a combination of injectable interferon and oral antivirals, but today it is primarily treated with oral antiviral medications alone. No vaccine exists for hepatitis C, which was once referred to as non-A, non-B hepatitis.
