Intrauterine Device (IUD):An IUD is a contraceptive device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It can take various forms, such as a coil, loop, triangle, or T-shape, and is typically made from plastic or metal. A healthcare provider inserts the IUD into the uterus. The exact mechanism by which IUDs prevent pregnancy isn't fully understood, but they likely work by immobilizing sperm before it reaches the fallopian tubes or by altering the uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. IUDs are one of the most reliable contraceptive methods available, boasting a very low failure rate. They are particularly suitable for those in stable, mutually monogamous relationships with a low risk of infection and are considered both safe and effective. However, the reputation of IUDs suffered due to the Dalkon Shield, an IUD that was linked to numerous infections, infertility cases, and even deaths, leading to its removal from the market in 1975. Nowadays, serious complications from IUDs are rare, although users may face a higher risk of developing certain issues. Possible side effects include uterine perforation, irregular bleeding, and cramps, with most complications occurring during or shortly after insertion. This information is partially derived from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
