Definition of Condom

Condoms:While the term "condom" is typically associated with the male version, there is also a female condom available. Both serve as barrier methods of contraception.Male Condoms:A male condom is a sheath that is worn over an erect penis before intercourse. It helps prevent pregnancy by blocking the passage of sperm. This barrier method of contraception is designed for single use only. Some condoms contain spermicide, commonly nonoxynol-9 in the United States, but it's not proven to enhance contraceptive effectiveness beyond that of the condom itself. By acting as a physical barrier, condoms prevent direct vaginal contact with semen, infectious secretions, and genital sores or discharges. Most condoms are crafted from latex rubber, with a small portion made from lamb intestines, often referred to as "lambskin" condoms. Since 1994, polyurethane condoms have been sold in the U.S. Apart from abstinence, latex condoms are the most reliable way to reduce the risk of infections caused by HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), though they do not protect against human papillomavirus (HPV) transmission. Some condoms come pre-lubricated, but these lubricants don't enhance birth control or STD protection. Non-oil-based lubricants, like water-based or K-Y jelly, are safe to use with latex or lambskin condoms. However, oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, lotions, or oils should be avoided as they can degrade the material.Female Condoms:The Reality Female Condom received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 1993. It is a lubricated polyurethane sheath, similar in shape to the male condom. The closed end, equipped with a flexible ring, is inserted into the vagina, while the open end stays outside, partially covering the genital area.Like male condoms, female condoms are available over the counter and are meant for single use. It is important not to use a female condom and a male condom simultaneously, as they may not stay securely in place.
