Definition of Male condom

Male Condom:This is a protective covering worn over an erect penis before intercourse, designed to prevent pregnancy by stopping sperm from entering. It functions as a barrier form of birth control. Each condom is intended for single use only. Some condoms include spermicide, typically nonoxynol-9 in the U.S., which is meant to kill sperm. However, research has not confirmed that spermicide offers extra contraceptive benefits beyond the condom itself.By serving as a physical barrier, condoms prevent direct contact between the vagina and semen, infectious fluids, and any genital sores or discharges. Most condoms are manufactured from latex rubber, though a small number are made from lamb intestines, known as "lambskin" condoms. Since 1994, polyurethane condoms have also been available in the United States.Besides abstinence, latex condoms are the most effective way to lower the risk of infections from viruses that cause HIV, other virus-related illnesses, and various sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Some condoms come pre-lubricated, but these lubricants do not enhance birth control effectiveness or protection against STDs. Water-based or non-oil-based lubricants like K-Y jelly can be used with latex or lambskin condoms. However, oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, lotions, or baby oil should be avoided as they can weaken the condom material.
