Definition of Freckle

Freckle:A freckle is a small, flat, circular mark on the skin, roughly the size of a nail head, that forms after repeated sun exposure, especially in individuals with fair skin. They can appear in various shades, such as yellow, tan, light brown, brown, or black, and are always darker than the surrounding skin due to the presence of a dark pigment. There are two main types of freckles: ephelides and lentigines. Ephelides (singular: ephelis) are light-brown, flat spots that typically emerge during sunny seasons and tend to fade during the winter months. Lentigines (singular: lentigo), on the other hand, are small, tan, brown, or black spots that are generally darker than ephelides and do not lighten in winter. While sun exposure plays a significant role in the formation of freckles, genetics also contributes. This is evident from the noticeable similarity in freckle patterns among identical twins, a trait less pronounced in fraternal twins. The gene responsible for freckles has been located on chromosome 4q32-q34.Freckles themselves are harmless but can sometimes be mistaken for more serious skin conditions. Conversely, serious issues like skin cancer might be overlooked as mere freckles. Anyone uncertain about any pigmented spots should consult a dermatologist. Treatments are available for those who wish to lighten or remove freckles for cosmetic reasons.See also: Ephelis; Lentigo; LEOPARD syndrome.
