Definition of Choriocarcinoma

Choriocarcinoma is a highly aggressive tumor that originates from trophoblastic cells. It is known for its invasive nature and its tendency to spread rapidly and extensively through both the blood and lymphatic systems. This type of cancer is one of the two forms of gestational trophoblastic tumors, with the other being the hydatidiform mole.Choriocarcinoma can develop following any type of pregnancy but is particularly associated with molar pregnancies, also known as hydatidiform moles. Approximately 2 to 3% of these cases may progress to choriocarcinoma. The prognosis for women with metastatic choriocarcinoma was once very poor. However, it has significantly improved with the introduction of combination chemotherapy treatments. Patients with high-risk metastatic conditions typically require intensive multidrug chemotherapy, whereas those with low-risk metastatic disease may be treated with a single medication. The cure rate for individuals with high-risk cases now ranges from 60 to 80%.
