Hydatidiform mole, also referred to as a molar pregnancy, is a type of tumor that develops into a cluster resembling a bunch of grapes within the uterus. These moles appear during a woman's reproductive years and remain confined to the uterus. However, a condition known as gestational trophoblastic neoplasia may arise from a hydatidiform mole. Initially, this condition can mimic a normal pregnancy. Diagnosis often involves noting the absence of fetal movement, conducting a pelvic examination, performing an ultrasound, and checking blood tests for elevated levels of the hormone beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). High hCG levels in a non-pregnant woman can indicate the presence of a hydatidiform mole. Treatment typically involves the removal of the mole through dilation and curettage (D & C), suction evacuation, and possibly a hysterectomy to remove the uterus.
