Amenorrhea refers to the absence or stopping of menstruation. It is typically categorized into two types: primary and secondary. Primary amenorrhea occurs when menstruation does not begin at puberty. In contrast, secondary amenorrhea happens when menstruation begins but then ceases. An example of secondary amenorrhea is the natural absence of menstruation during pregnancy, which is considered normal and not due to any medical condition. Similarly, amenorrhea during breastfeeding is another example of this natural secondary type.The term "amenorrhea" originates from three Greek roots: "a-" meaning no, "men" meaning month, and "rhoia" meaning flow, which together signify the absence of a monthly flow. In less common instances, amenorrhea is referred to by another name.
