Mucus colitis is a prevalent condition marked by unusual gut contractions (motility) and heightened gut sensitivity (hypersensitivity), leading to abdominal pain, bloating, changes in stool consistency, and irregular bowel movements. These may present as diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both, with symptoms that are typically chronic and fluctuate over time. While the condition can cause ongoing discomfort, it doesn't result in serious damage to organs. Diagnosing this disorder generally requires a process of elimination to rule out other illnesses, along with confirming the presence of symptoms. Treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms and may involve dietary adjustments, such as increasing fiber intake while avoiding dairy products and artificial sweeteners, as well as incorporating exercise, relaxation methods, and medications. This condition is also known by other names, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
