Definition of Quality of Chest Compressions

Quality of Chest Compressions

Quality of chest compressions describes how effectively compressions are performed during CPR, and it is one of the strongest predictors of survival from cardiac arrest. High-quality compressions maximize the blood flow generated to the brain and heart with each push.

The key metrics are adequate depth (at least 2 inches or 5 cm in adults), correct rate (100–120 per minute), complete chest recoil between compressions, minimal interruptions, and avoidance of excessive ventilation. Even brief pauses sharply reduce blood pressure and flow. Real-time feedback devices and frequent compressor changes help maintain quality, and training that measures these metrics produces measurably better performance.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
