Definition of Homocysteine

Homocysteine

Homocysteine is a compound produced by the body, often as a byproduct of meat consumption. Under normal circumstances, it is converted into other substances. When homocysteine builds up in the blood, it can indicate potential health issues. High levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, dementia, and venous thromboembolism (blood clots in the veins). Homocysteine is thought to harm blood vessels by damaging the arterial lining and promoting the growth of smooth muscle cells. It can also interfere with the normal blood clotting process. To reduce homocysteine levels, it is recommended to consume less meat and take B vitamins, including folate, B6, and B12, which are essential for the enzymes that process homocysteine.
