Definition of Acromegaly

Acromegaly is a condition resulting from excessive growth hormone production by the pituitary gland after adolescence has concluded. When this hormone is overproduced before adolescence ends, it leads to gigantism, where individuals may grow to heights exceeding 7 or 8 feet. In contrast, when excess growth hormone is released after adolescence, height does not increase, but acromegaly develops. This condition is characterized by the gradual thickening of the skin, soft tissues, and bones in the hands and feet, leading to significant disability beyond just needing larger gloves, rings, and shoes. Symptoms include joint pain, insulin resistance, visual disturbances, and severe headaches. The overproduction of growth hormone is often due to a pituitary tumor or other factors. Treatment options typically include medication, surgery, or radiation. Without proper treatment, both pituitary gigantism and acromegaly can result in a higher risk of mortality from cardiovascular issues, cancer, and other health problems.
