Definition of Tinea unguium

Tinea unguium, commonly referred to as onychomycosis, is the most prevalent nail infection. This condition causes nails to become white, opaque, thick, and brittle. Certain groups are more susceptible to developing onychomycosis, including:- Individuals with a weakened immune system- Those suffering from diseases affecting small blood vessels, such as peripheral vascular disease- Older women, possibly due to a deficiency that heightens infection risk- Women of any age who frequently use artificial nails, such as acrylics or wrapsThe application of artificial nails can elevate the risk of onychomycosis because the natural nail surface is often roughened with an emery board during the process, which can damage the nail. Additionally, emery boards may harbor infections, and moisture can accumulate beneath the artificial nail, creating an ideal environment for fungal growth. Another term for this condition is dermatophytic onychomycosis.
