Definition of Testosterone

Testosterone

Testosterone:Known as the "male hormone," testosterone is a sex hormone produced by the testes. It promotes the development of male sexual traits, stimulates and maintains male secondary sexual features, and prevents changes in these traits after castration. Chemically, it is identified as 17-beta-hydroxy-4-androstene-3-one. Among naturally occurring androgens, testosterone is the most powerful. Androgens are responsible for developing male characteristics like a deep voice and facial hair, and they also enhance muscle strength and bone density.Elevated testosterone levels are associated with improved health outcomes in men, such as a reduced risk of certain conditions. However, high testosterone levels are also linked to risky behaviors, including increased aggression and smoking, which may negate these health advantages.Testosterone can be prescribed to address various medical issues, such as certain female disorders, low gonadal function in males, cryptorchidism (when the testis does not descend into the scrotum), and irregular menstrual cycles.
