Magnesium sulfate is a medication used in advanced cardiac life support to treat specific cardiac and respiratory emergencies. Its most established cardiac use is for torsades de pointes, a distinctive form of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia associated with a prolonged QT interval, where magnesium can stabilize the heart's electrical activity.
Beyond cardiac arrest, magnesium sulfate is used to manage severe asthma exacerbations, eclampsia and pre-eclampsia in pregnancy, and certain electrolyte disturbances. As with all resuscitation medications, correct indication, dosing, and administration are essential, since inappropriate use can cause its own complications such as low blood pressure and respiratory depression.
