Definition of Chikungunya virus

Chikungunya virus

Chikungunya Virus Overview:The Chikungunya virus, primarily found in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia, causes an illness similar to dengue fever. It is an arbovirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The most common symptom is intense joint pain accompanied by swelling. First identified in East Africa during 1952-1953, this virus belongs to the Togaviridae family and is classified under the genus Alphavirus. Human infection occurs through bites from infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, with outbreaks maintained through a cycle of human-to-mosquito-to-human transmission, akin to dengue and urban transmission patterns.Infection with the Chikungunya virus presents with sudden symptoms such as chills, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, and rash. These symptoms typically appear 3-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Unlike dengue, Chikungunya is marked by a shorter duration of fever, persistent joint pain in some cases, and no reported fatalities. The virus is not contagious and cannot be transmitted from person to person. Treatment focuses on symptom relief as there is no cure, and although most individuals recover within a week, some may experience lingering joint pain for months. Currently, no vaccine is available to prevent Chikungunya virus infection. The name "Chikungunya" is derived from a Swahili term meaning "that which bends up," describing the bent posture of patients suffering from severe joint pain due to the disease. It is pronounced chik-n-gunya, with emphasis on the first syllable.
