Definition of Miller's lung

Miller's lung

Miller's lung is a form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis affecting individuals who are allergic to the granary weevil, also known as the wheat weevil or Sitophilus granarius. This condition is characterized by lung inflammation resulting from inhaling foreign substances. Those handling grains or flours contaminated with this weevil are particularly susceptible, hence the name Miller's lung.Symptoms often appear suddenly, including fever, cough, chills, and shortness of breath, typically manifesting within hours of re-exposure to the weevil. If further contact with the weevil is avoided, symptoms generally improve within a day or two, although complete recovery may take several weeks. In more severe cases of Miller's lung, symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath can develop over several days or weeks and may necessitate hospitalization. Chronic exposure to the weevil over months or years can lead to lung scarring (fibrosis), with progressively worsening shortness of breath and a productive cough, potentially resulting in respiratory failure over time.
