Targeted radiation therapy involves utilizing computers to generate a 3-dimensional image of the tumor, allowing for precise targeting and delivery of the maximum radiation dose to the tumor while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. This method is also referred to as 3-D conformal radiation therapy. In contrast, traditional radiation therapy often affects not only the tumor but also the surrounding healthy tissues due to its less focused approach. The aim of targeted radiation is to concentrate a higher dose on the cancerous area, reducing harm to nearby tissues. This technique is currently used for treating certain cancers and is being researched for effectiveness in other types, such as lung cancer, brain tumors, and cancers of the head and neck.
