Definition of Conformal radiation therapy

Conformal radiation therapy

Conformal radiation therapy involves utilizing computer technology to generate a three-dimensional image of a tumor. This allows for precise targeting, enabling the tumor to receive the maximum dose of radiation while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This approach is also referred to as 3-D or conformational therapy. Unlike conventional radiation therapy, which inadvertently affects nearby healthy tissue as it targets the tumor, conformal radiation aims to concentrate a higher dose on the cancer itself, reducing harm to adjacent areas. This method is currently used for certain cancers and is being researched for effectiveness in treating other types, such as lung cancer, brain tumors, and cancers of the head and neck.
