Definition of Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is a compound derived from the bark and leaves of the white willow tree, though it can also be synthesized. This multifunctional substance is known for its fungicidal and keratolytic properties. It serves as a preservative in food products and is included in toothpaste formulations. Additionally, it acts as a peeling agent in various topical applications such as ointments, creams, gels, and shampoos, aimed at reducing skin or scalp issues. Salicylic acid is a key ingredient in many acne treatments because it promotes the shedding of skin cells, thereby preventing pore blockage. When it reacts with acetic acid, it forms acetylsalicylic acid, commonly referred to as aspirin. Chemically, salicylic acid is also known as orthohydroxybenzoic acid.
